I have worked as a journalist, specialised in Latin America, development and the environment, for over 30 years. My first job, as a correspondent for The Financial Times in Brazil, was in the 1970s. Since then I have written for The Guardian, The Economist, The Times, The Observer, among others. I also worked for the BBC World Service radio for over a decade as a Latin America producer and commentator. In 1996 I won a gold award at the New York Radio Festival for a series of six programmes entitled Surviving the 20th Century and in 1997 I won a silver award at the New York Radio Festival in 1997 for a programme on the first contact with the outside world of the isolated Korubo Indians.!--
